Recently, the Portuguese government has transitioned from a real estate centric golden visa model to one that requires investment into the economy through funds, job creation and cultural donations. In fact, investment in real estate or related funds no longer qualifies for Portugal’s golden visa programme. I believe this is a positive pivot as there is no doubt that the Golden Visa minimum threshold was one of the factors pushing property prices up beyond reason or local reach while real estate was the main golden visa investment pathway. It also encourages more funding of Portugal’s exciting tech startup scene and employment growth. The revised golden visa programme is more likely to attract more investors who are truly invested in the country, supporting its economic prosperity in turn.
While there is talk of the citizenship pathway being extended from 5 years to 10, Portugal’s Golden Visa programme remains popular due to its minimal stay requirements (14 days in the first two years and 21 days in the following three), travel access to the Schengan area and the right to live, work and study in Portugal. The minimum level of investment is currently €500,000 for venture capital and investment funds.
To streamline the golden visa application and investment process, a firm called LXL Ventures has created a new golden visa investment fund, which is open to investors from any country but it is tailored specifically to U.S. investors. Led by a team of experts working with Celtis Ventures (a licensed Portuguese fund management company), FRESH Portugal (Portugal’s leading expatriate-focused law firm) and Green Ocean (a U.S.-based investment advisory firm led by certified financial professionals, specialising in American securities markets and institutional portfolio management), LXL Ventures offers a comprehensive spectrum of services, from cross-border legal advice and tax planning to financial advice.
LXL Ventures’ Golden Visa Investment fund has been designed to be fully compliant in the U.S. and Portugal and notably, it has has been structured to be NHR 2.0 compliant for investors who wish to move to Portugal and benefit from a favourable tax setup while enjoying the peaceful, wholesome lifestyle that this country offers.
Aligning with U.S. investor preferences, LXL Ventures takes a considered approach to its investment strategy, balancing growth opportunities with capital preservation. Funds are distributed between low-risk U.S. equities (40%), Portugal’s established leading companies (35%) and early-stage technology companies within the Portugal’s innovative startup ecosystem (25%).
